I talked about a quick walk being my saviour when my mood needs a pick me up.

4. Get moving outside

Accredited Practising Dietitian Casuarina Forsyth likes to take a break outside when she needs a quick pick-me-up.

“When my mood needs a boost I like to go for a walk and get some fresh air. I find even just a short stroll around the block helps. The fresh air helps me to be mindful and present, and the walking produces feel-good endorphins, which always improves my mood.”

I have a few other things that I like to regularly do to boost my mood as well, these are below.

Creating an appealing environment

I don't know about anyone else, but when I am living in an unorganised environment I tend to be a bit on edge. By no means am I a clean freak, but I do feel a lot better when things are organised. I have recently started a new habit which I love! On the weekends I clean the bathroom, and pick fresh flowers from the garden, and put them in there next to the sink. This simple act makes our environment look a little nicer and I find it strangely calming. This week I picked lavender, which has the added benefit of smelling divine! I also enjoy starting the week with fresh sheets, but don't get there every week.

Mindfulness

I find taking a few deep breaths is a really great way to bring me back to the now, and to stop me from getting too caught up in external things that might be going on. I'm definitely not a meditation, or mindfulness guru, but I do find that when I can bring awareness back into my body and how I am physically feeling then I tend to have a more stable mood.

Eating a balanced diet

Of course, this has to be throw in the mix. I know for me, when I eat well and regularly, my moods and appetite are more stable and I feel so much better mentally as well as physically. Having a mix of lots of protein, carbs and healthy fats at each meal helps my body feel good and satisfied, and means that I can get the most out of my day. Also, eating lots of vegetables always helps me to feel happy.
